Little Darlings

It started on a whim: make a new drawing every day and see where it goes. But the background seeds were planted when I lived with my Mom during her last year of life as she succumbed to Alzheimer’s. We spent our days drawing and laughing, sharing memories and making new ones. I now find this to be a meditative art practice, and I love the ‘signature’ that these black and white drawings reveal.

My original drawings were archival ink on white paper but I’ve since expanded to color backgrounds and making words on wood panel. The eye icon is a recurring element which helps give them personalities to me. I call them Little Darlings, where little is a word of affection not size. They’ve been scanned and can be reproduced at any size. They also love being placed in groups of 2-9, allowing you to build your own darling community!

Here are a few and time-lapse video showing how one was made. I use no other tools than pens, substrate, and my own body. I meditate before I start to draw, and invite the results to come to me through my hand. I have many more; to be posted soon. Click on any image to view it full size.
